Without them, my clothes would take up 2x space. Plus, they double as pillows in a pinch. I bought mine in 2011 and they are still going strong. The only time I don’t use them is if I’m throwing an overnight bag together. Otherwise, I would be lost without them.

My regular multi-climate packing list has 6 bottoms (1 jeans, 1 skirt, 1 short, 1 long trousers that are lightweight and then 2 leggings for layering in the cold). 6 tops (3 tanks, 1 t-shirt, 1 long sleeve shirt, 1 flannel button down shirt), again layers when cold ^^ I always wear one of the bottoms and tops so that’s five in the bag at a time.
And I use packing cubs (one for tops, one for bottoms, small one for underwear (6 bottoms and two bra’s in the pack)

For outerwear I pack one fleece, one water proof windbreaker, a buff, a baseball cap and a large scarf I can use as a blanket in a pinch as well. When I am somewhere really cold I buy a beanie there and gloves. Otherwise I get by with this.

Hardest part of my packing list is shoes. I always travel with lightweight sneakers (I have the TOMS and sometimes the Skechers), ballet flats (TIEKs), flip flops and a pair of sandals. All these are lightweight and can be pushed flat without it losing its shape. When I know I’m going to be hiking a lot I also bring my Vivobarefoot trail shoes as they can stand all kind of terrain, yet can be squeezed flat again and even be folded in half without losing any quality.

Toiletries include a shampoo bar, soap bar, toothpaste, toothbrush, foldable comb with mirror, razor and shaving oil. Extra’s some others won’t carry are my pair of glasses, extra contact lenses and contact fluid. Deodorant stick and lip balm as well as sun screen is always on my person.

Electronics include my phone, music player, headphones, e-reader, battery pack and supplies for charging (world adapter + power strip and cables).
Non-electronics I always have with me are a notebook and pen. And TSA locks (two padlocks and one cable lock).

Extra’s I like to take with me when I am gone for a long while are utensils (spork and chop sticks) and a foldable water bottle (with steri pen if I am going somewhere iffy).

So a bit more in the clothing department, but less in the electronics department. I think I’m pretty good. I fit all this in a 28 liter backpack by the way. Thanks to the packing cubes which do compress, this is possible ^^

We did travel with camping gear in the beginning but that was because we were hitchhiking a lot. Nowadays we stay mostly in hostel/budget hotels so we don’t have the need for camping gear anymore.

While I do like to stay at hostels, I camp when I can.

Of course, this adds weight and bulk, but when in warmer climates, you can get away with a hammock/tarp or a small bivy and pad. I was able to get most of your list and camp gear into my 45L/15L Eagle Creek (it has locking zippers!), though the hammock/tarp ended up strapped to the outside of the pack. I was forced to take a Macbook Pro so I could do video editing (Work-cation). That was heavier than my sleeping gear!

My laptop is heavy from Lenovo. My camera is Nikon D5100 also heavy. I have Yugen packing cubes and it helped me to organize my clothes. Believe me, it was a life saver.

Yea a lot of people seem to like packing cubes but I am not a fan. What packing cubes do you use?

Totally agree, Stephanie!
This is the first trip I’ve used packing cubes, and I’ll never be without them again. Don’t know how I survived without them all these years.

Everything else looks great though. =)
