Once I learned of the history of US intervention in Guatemala–via the Dulles brothers and Eisenhower, the School of the Americas, etc.–going back decades to the 1950s and the US support for criminal acts against the people of this country, I can’t enjoy a tourist experience or think of living a low-cost retirement there without doing service with project run by Guatemalans. Visit, spend money and help the locals–especially the indigenous villages, and decide for yourselves.

But, there is some much lesser known places in the highlands that are worthy of a visit (or a move). If anything, just take the drive from Chichi to Coban. It’s the most beautiful drive you’ll take in your life. You can stop over in Uspantan which has an amazing show of fall clouds every evening and take a break from the touristy places. Once in Coban, make it up to Semuc Champey and also visit the Biotopo to try and sneak a peek at the endangered Quetzal Bird, the nation’s representative that holds a meaningful legend
